Chit-chat Wednesday - Baking Cakes for Mermaids

We spend the days jumping the waves – 'jumping sharks!' my daughter shrieks. Together we collect shells so tiny they disappear into light.

I watch her sitting in the waves, telling stories to the mermaids who gather to listen. Her stories involve castles made of ice-creams and cats of fire. Precious moments and tales, I press them in my mind, dangling like silver charms to reflect upon when the skies turn grey.

At night the stars are so luminous, so brazen. We are not used to the stars flashing their bodies – in the inner-city stars are modest, only ever half-glimpsed through the pollution.

But it is the innocent blue days that present the serious baking challenges. Sandcastles, jellyfish and crabs admire our efforts as we spend hours baking cakes for mermaids.

  8. i teared up (happy tear up) when i read this! so gorgeous.....
when i was little i used to go and talk to the faeries in the back yard...but mum always told me that faeries weren't real and after a while, i stopped seeing them. Daisy is so lucky she'll never get told that she is being silly for talking to 'things that aren't real'....

  11. Aw, what a lovely time and lovely entry. Your daughter looks very happy in that water! I wish I could put my feet into the sea right now! Funny how everything is so magical and random when you are younger. It still is when you are older but in different ways and we often get bogged down with daily chores so we forget sometimes. Children are good for reawakening this. xxx

  15. Mary, that is a lovely comment. Thank you. Lavender and purple happen to be Daisy's favourite colour. Belette, you always say the perfect thing!Megan, it is a lovely age although there are moments (such as supermarket shopping) I am amazed how quickly she can revert to the two year tantrums. Curious Cat, you have summed up why I love being around Daisy so much. She does waken my eyes to magic I had long forgotten in the everyday world. Isabelle, It is always lovely to see you here. I would love to tell tales to the beautiful Miss P. If her room is as beautiful as your new loungeroom I am there! Pinry, Daisy really is like a mini Tale Peddler. She often doesn't want to visit other children or go out because 'she's telling her stories' I think this is something to cherish and try to encourage it. Cat, I almost teared up reading your comment. You must go back to believing the fairies whether you see them or not. They are there! Thank you for always leaving such lovely comments. And thanks also to everybody else who left such lovely thoughts on this post. Jennifer, Gary, Sharon, Willow and Sher. You are all so appreciated. xx
